#What does Pawn do?
Pawn will show you right on an item tooltip in-game whether it is an upgrade over your current item. You will see an up-arrow and a percent upgrade. There are some other nifty features, but that’s the core functionality of the addon: is item X, by itself, better than item Y?

#Whatdoesn’t Pawn do?

  1. Pawn does not rank legendary items, set bonuses, trinket procs, relic traits, or any other special effect.
  2. Pawn does not look at your entire set of gear – it only compares two single items in a vacuum. Whether you are completely naked or in BiS gear, it will show the same score difference between two items.

#How does it score stuff?
Pawn does single-item comparisons. For example, if you are looking at a pair of gloves, it will compare them to your currently equipped gloves. It does this using stat weights or “scales”. The concept here is super simple: each stat is given a numeric value. It then multiplies all the stats on the item by the value to get a total score. Then it shows you the difference in total score for the two items. That’s it! Very straightforward and easy to follow.

#How do I get these “weights”?
Pawn has some defaults based on popular builds, but it is best to get weights tailored to your character. The easiest way to do this is via the Export to Addon buttons on our website. They appear underneath the Gear Explorer, Best-in-Bags, and Best-in-Slot gear tables. Each button will generate a Pawn string that is tailored to the related gear*. For example, if you press the button under the Gear Explorer, you will get a Pawn string that is tailored for your currently equipped gear. If you press the one under the Best-in-Slot result, it will be tailored for that best-in-slot gear set.

We recommend that you use the one from your Best-in-Bags set of gear, or the Gear Explorer if you are not using the Best-in-Bags feature.

See the reply below for instructions on how to export.

#How should I use it in combination with Ask Mr. Robot?
As mentioned above, Pawn is not a full gear optimizer. It is meant to be a quick and convenient tool for getting an idea about whether an item is potentially worth using.

Because it does not examine your entire set of gear, try combining that item with different combinations of the gear that you own, or rank any special effects like sets, legendaries, etc., you should use it to get a rough idea of whether an item might be an upgrade, and that’s it.

Once you have decided the item is maybe good, then you should export your character to our site and use Best in Bags to determine if it is an immediate upgrade when combined with the gear that you already own.

If you don’t want to use Best in Bags, we would recommend at least looking it up in the ranked lists on the Gear Explorer. Those lists are fully searchable and filterable, and will give a more complete ranking that includes all special effects, but it won’t try out all the different combinations of gear that you own like Best in Bags does.

Another alternative would be to simulate your gear with and without the item – our simulator is an easy way to do that. Note that simulators take much longer to give you an answer than the gear optimizer for a very small difference in accuracy.

(*) Note that weights will be tailored to your gear only if you are using one of our Adaptive gearing strategies. Blender settings are also taken into account and will modify the weights appropriately. You can also use a custom gearing strategy to get the weights that go with that particular strategy, but keep in mind that your custom strategies will not adapt if you change talents or legendaries – you would need a different custom strategy for each setup.

The Upgrade Finder has a new, special search for ranking Shadowlands legendary powers. It works a little differently than other Upgrade Finder searches – please read this so that you understand the rankings and get the most out of them!

Note: we are still improving and tweaking these rankings as we lead up to the first raid. You may see them shift slightly over the next couple weeks. And as always, whenever Blizzard does any kind of balancing patch, we will update these rankings within a day or two.

How is it different than other Upgrade Finder searches?

Slot

Most of the Upgrade Finder searches are very straightforward: if you were to get the item in question and equip it with all of your other current gear as-is, would it be an upgrade, and by how much?

The legendary ranking is different: you generally want to plan ahead. Which legendary has potential to be the best for me down the line, when I have more gear, a fully unlocked soulbind tree, and a bunch of conduits?

That’s the question we answer with the current ranking, and the ranking that we think most people actually want.

Which settings impact the legendary ranking?

Since we’re doing a different kind of ranking, not all of your Best in Bags settings influence the ranking. The only settings that matter for the legendary ranking are your:

  1. Chosen gearing strategy
  2. Talents
  3. Covenant

None of the other settings influence it (and most of them would have little to no impact anyway).

How do we calculate the legendary rankings?

Unlike other Upgrade Finder rankings that are calculated on demand for your character and setup, the legendary rankings are pre-calculated based on a very large amount of data. We run a specialized set of simulations and optimizations to try and explore the potential of each legendary – give each one a “fair shake” based on other available gear, conduits, stat distributions, etc.

We do this analysis for every combination of talents and covenants. This is one of the coolest things about these rankings – they adapt to how you want to play. Most of the other “best legendary” lists that you’ll find out there have tons of hidden and very rigid assumptions, e.g. that you will always be using a very specific talent build or covenant. We want to give you good rankings no matter what you choose.

What about the suggested slot and stats?

You’ll notice that we recommend which secondary stats to put on your legendary, and which slot to use for that legendary.

These are just suggestions.

In general, which slot and stats you use for a legendary are far less important than which legendary power you use. If you want to put it in a different slot or change one of the secondary stats from our recommendation, you will barely be able to tell the difference (if at all).

That said, our recommendation is based on a pretty extensive set of optimizations that try each legendary power in each slot with several combinations of stats. You can’t go wrong with the recommendation if you don’t have a preference one way or the other.

Why does it only show one item level of reward?

We do this to simplify the display. The item level of a legendary only changes the amount of stats on the legendary – it has no impact on the legendary power itself. You should craft the highest item level version that you are willing to pay for.

Getting the best legendary power is more important than which item level version of the item you have. Also remember that each upgrade in item level is 5 less than the previous, so upgrading a 190 to 210 is the most cost effective, then it goes down from there.
